Requirements

YOL is going to have an in-person 2021 Spring Season.

We are having to revise the beginning of our season due to rising Covid-19 numbers. To ensure the safety of everyone involved, the season is planned to begin mid April with the concert in May.

Auditions will still be held December 5th for students who are new to YOL or for students who are moving up to a different orchestra. Those students who are wishing to stay in their current orchestra do not need to audition (this applies only to this 2021 Spring Season). Deadline to sign up for the December 5th Audition is December 4th.

Auditions will be virtual. A schedule will be posted as soon as possible. Check later for sign-up link here.

There will be an additional Audition in the Spring.

All YOL rehearsals, concerts, and activities will follow the safety guidelines and protocols recommended by the CDC and LISD, including (but not limited to): symptom and temperature checks, mask requirements, social distancing, hand-washing, and disinfecting of surfaces.

An official YOL COVID19 Safety Protocol and Guidelines will be released and posted as soon as possible.

YOL will be rehearsing at the LHUCA (The Louise Hopkins Underwood Center for the Arts) this Spring. This site has been chosen based on being able to provide a safe environment with plenty of room for social distancing even at lower Covid-19 occupancy levels and appropriate disinfection protocols. The facility is closed to the public on Sundays, therefore there will only be individuals associated with YOL and the necessary LHUCA staff in the building during YOL rehearsals.

YOL ORCHESTRAS

Prelude String Orchestra: Designed for beginning to intermediate string players, this orchestra serves musicians in their first few years of development by fine-tuning their performance technique in order to prepare them for participation in the YOL Philharmonic and Symphony Orchestras. There is no lower age limit for this orchestra, however the student must be able to read music and be attentive for rehearsals.

Philharmonic Orchestra: Designed for the intermediate to advanced string, woodwind, brass, and percussion players. This is a full orchestra, playing exciting and innovative repertoire, while receiving the necessary intensive training designed to prepare them for membership in the YOL Symphony Orchestra.

Symphony Orchestra: Designed for the more advanced players on string, woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments. Students are chosen on the basis of an annual audition that includes excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire. The Symphony Orchestra performs music drawn from the standard professional concert literature as well as newly composed works. The orchestra (in addition to the two major concerts per year) is invited to participate (along with alumni and area professional musicians) in the annual Fourth of July Fireworks Concert and holds an annual concerto competition for its members. The YOL Concerto Competition winner performs with the orchestra on the Spring concert.
